Maranacook Lake is about 6 miles long and up to 1 mile wide. A freight train runs along the opposite side from where I camped. It sounds great on the lake, especially around 11 PM when all is quiet, a fire is crackling, and everyone is in sleeping bags. You can just hear the train when it is 6 miles away, first idling, then when it gets moving. The sound creeps up in volume as the train approaches, and then once it gets your attention, it fades away off into the distance to points East. Here is a shortened (5 minute) version of the sound track.
