Sailing on Barnegat Bay

Paul writes:   We all sat and drank and laughed some more into the wee hours.  We lost some of the crew to the sack as the night wore on.  I was feeling really good, almost good enough to try my first night sail in over twenty years.  Almost.  I shared my idea with Jake and Morry and asked them to join me, as much for confidence as experience.  The winds were still steady and pleasant.  The bay was glassy and still.  Jake and Morry felt the effects of the long day, long night and abundant food and spirits.  They hesitated, I waffled, we didn’t go.  The only regrettable decision of the trip.
Morry writes:   Paul’s singing and guitar playing Saturday night on the beach  was a highlight.  His musical style is hard to describe - you really had to be there to appreciate Paul’s delivery (a melding of Janis Joplin and Woody Guthrie would be just scratching the surface!).  Another highlight - for all the boating activity on the bay in the afternoon, come dusk, there was no one around.  It was as though we had the place all to ourselves.  Sitting in my beach chair in front of the fire and hearing nothing else around me made me feel like I was a million miles away.

Mike writes:    Had an awesome dinner, everyone cooked something and we all chowed down. Jake’s steamed shrimp were great.  Started the fire around 7 PM, caught the attention of a ranger; he checked us out from a distance and I guess he figured it was OK, didn’t hear from him after that.  Jake “tended” the fire for the night, nothing like cedar wood burning in a camp fire, smell is sweet and pleasant.  Paul broke out his guitar and played for hours.  Tammy and I retired around midnight.  A few hardy souls were still by the fire.  The next morning I was surprised to see the entire pile of wood was gone; we collected a LARGE pile.
